In the early 1900s, Standard Oil Company of New Jersey sought to strengthen its position in the southern United States. After considering several locations, the company chose a location high on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in North Baton Rouge. In April 1909, Standard Oil Company of Louisiana was chartered, and by November 1909 the refinery processed its first products. Since that time, ExxonMobil Baton Rouge has been essential to the economic, political and social landscape of the community. Operational excellence and improved energy efficiency are responsible for Baton Rouge's ever-increasing output capacity. Our versatile integrated facilities produce gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, aviation fuel, lubricating oils and waxes. In addition, products produced at the Chemical Plant, along with the Resins Finishing, Polyolefins and Plastics plants, are used to make products people use every day, including paint, adhesives, plastic milk jugs, auto parts, plastic films, synthetic rubber, diapers and lubricants.

Job Summary

 

As a member of ExxonMobil’s Technology and Engineering organization, the Polypropylene Finishing Improve Engineer will serve as a senior technical resource for a fleet of polypropylene solids handling equipment in Baton Rouge, LA. The applicant would be primarily responsible for the optimization and betterment of existing process technology in this area.  Applicants would also support development and commercialization of new polypropylene products, as well as assisting routine manufacturing support.

The Improve Engineer needs to have an in-depth understanding of the current state of polyolefin finishing technology (particularly polypropylene) and will create and disseminate new process technology within the organization.  The role will also work with and provide informal leadership of multi-disciplinary teams to solve problems and improve the performance at ExxonMobil’s worldwide network of polymers plants.

This position will be based in Batton Rouge, LA.

Primary Job Functions

 

  • Provide polypropylene finishing technology expertise and support to the Baton Rouge Polyolefins Plant to ensure world class performance in process safety, plant reliability and profitability
  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of most complex polyolefin finishing problems
  • Drive improvement within ExxonMobil operations through technical leadership and innovation 
  • Support commissioning, start-up, or commercialization of newly implemented technologies or products
  • Proactively identify and help resolve emerging issues before they escalate 
  • Participate in Global Technology Network meetings as site Technology representative and lead process sub-networks with other manufacturing sites across the globe
  • Mentor engineers within various Technical and Technology departments

Qualifications and Work Experience Required

 

  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent degree
  • At least three (preferable five or more) years of demonstrated work experience in a manufacturing environment, including plant optimization, process control and process problem troubleshooting
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in solids handling and extrusion, preferably polyolefins
  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills are required
  • Collaboration, initiative, ethics, and safety awareness are key personal values
  • Willing to relocate to Baton Rouge, LA and able to travel 5-10% domestically and/or internationally

Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

 

  • The preferred applicant will have first-hand experience and knowledge of
    • Safe solids handling and dust explosion prevention
    • Polymer compounding and extrusion
    • Pneumatic conveying systems and solids handling
  • Applicant should show a hunger for learning independently and desire to grow and informally lead the organization
  • Applicant should work to actively care for their team to make tasks easier and safer for engineering and operations crew
  • Applicant should be able to communicate technical topics to audiences with different backgrounds, both cultural and educational
