POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the ammonia refrigeration system, boilers, and other cooling systems. Ensure compliance with PSM Program as approved by the company. Responsible for maintaining all electrical systems from services to loads. Supervises a staff of Refrigeration Technicians and Electricians.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs Hazard Analysis, P.S.M. Audit, and related regulatory compliance programs of the system.
  • Orients, trains and certifies refrigeration employees in the operation of the refrigeration system and related components. Responds to ammonia releases within the scope of training.
  • Develops, submits, monitors, and recommends adjustments to annual operation budget for the department authorizing expenditures related to machinery repair and maintenance.
  • Maintains the refrigeration system through routine checks, lubrication of equipment, and repair/replacement of parts as needed.
  • Conducts compressor checks. Monitors pressure in the system. Monitors, adjusts, and replaces valves as needed.
  • Performs mechanical work rebuilding equipment. Will repair electrical systems, gaskets, bearings, and motors, as needed.
  • Complies with Pictsweet Respiratory Protection Policy program. Complies with fit testing requirements.
  • Oversees the facility's HVAC systems. Coordinates repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Oversees the facility's roof. Ensures roof inspections are completed and coordinates repairs when needed.
  • Directs and participates in departmental safety meetings.
  • Complies with all company safety standards and policies including, but not limited to: PSM requirements (Hot Work Permits, Management of Change, etc.), Lockout/Tagout, Forklift Certification, Hazard Communication Program, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Electrical Safety, and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Must complete 24-hour hazwoper certification training and Incident Commander training. Must complete annual refresher training of Emergency Response Team as offered by the company. Works cooperative with Plant Management and Plant Safety personnel to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the ammonia refrigeration system.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulations relating to food safety and personnel safety such as FDA, USDA, OSHA, and CalOSHA. Complies with all other regulations and laws affecting the company (business law, trade secrets, personnel practices, etc.)
  • Follows all Company policies and procedures, which include SOPs, Employee Handbook, Food Quality Policies, GMP Handbook, HACPP, and Pictsweet Safety Procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring food grade oil is kept separate from non-food grade oil and that the containers are labeled appropriately.
  • Assists in both internal and external food safety audits. Conducts monthly Food Safety audits, tracks corrective action for Refrigeration audits and maintains documentation of audits.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE:

Must have at least five years of industrial maintenance experience including three years operating a large ammonia refrigeration system. Service on an Emergency Response Team preferred. Prior supervisory experience of technically trained professionals preferred.

EDUCATION:

Must possess certification as a Journeyman Refrigeration Engineer or achieve certification within three years of hire. Bachelor Degree in Industrial Maintenance, or a related field, preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

Must be physically capable of wearing an SCBA (and Chemical Suit), respirator and serving as an emergency responder. Serve on the Emergency Response Team as technical support, incident commander, safety office or emergency responder, as needed.

Must be able to install/repair/rebuild compressors (motors and pumps), trouble shoot electrical/mechanical issues, operate boilers, read blueprints & schematics; read,comprehend and apply information from complex technical materials.

Be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position will work in a plant and maintenance environment. This position will be required to work in a refrigerated environment and freezer.
