The Payroll and Benefit Advisor takes total ownership of the accurate preparation and disbursement of payroll and benefits. This position is accountable for all payroll related functions including payroll related tax compliance, payroll account reconciliations, benefit administration and miscellaneous payroll deductions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receive and accurately process payroll timesheets, benefit forms, new hire/termination/retirement and other payroll changes on a semi monthly basis for all staff
  • Liaison with benefit providers regarding the administration of benefits including Retirement, Health and Wellness, Short Term Disability (STD) and Long Term Disability (LTD) claims
  • Accurately administer leave processes (i.e. bereavement, maternity/parental, sick/LOA)
  • Prepare monthly/yearly reports as required (i.e. vacation usage, sick/LOA etc.)
  • Verify employment and salary confirmation letters
  • Responsible for coordinating and pro-actively reviewing the payroll process and data
  • Responsible for working with operations management to pro-actively document irregular payroll costs including but not limited to overtime and overpayment
  • Partner with corporate payroll departments to reconcile record discrepancies and execute transactions related to expat payroll and, local tax requirements
  • Maintain employees files, issue ROE’s, reconcile T4s and other related annual tax reporting
  • Responsible for identifying gaps in the company’s payroll policies, programs, procedures, processes, practices and working with the HR Manager to close those gaps
  • Support all human resources policies and objectives for the Company that will establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale and motivation, and that comply with policies, procedures, programs and laws
  • May be required to perform additional duties and special projects as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Finance or, equivalent is recommended
  • 4+ years payroll experience, in both unionized and non-unionized payrolls
  • Experience with the Oil and Gas sector and Drilling Contractors is preferred
  • Must have ability to maintain high standards of confidentiality, accuracy and timeliness
  • Must have broad and in-depth knowledge of local union regulations governing Human Resources
  • Must be a detail oriented, self-starter and able to work with little supervision while maintaining quality
  • Must have good PC skills to include all MS Office products with extensive knowledge of Microsoft
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills and be able to effectively communicate with staff, management, customers, and vendors.
  • Must possess sound analytical and reasoning skills and have the ability to follow directions
  • Must have the ability to work under pressure in time sensitive environments to meet challenging deadlines including outside of regular business hours as required
  • Ability to take initiative in handling routine matters and inquires, diplomacy and experience to develop potential solutions, understanding when to seek direction
  • Excellent knowledge of related Federal and Provincial payroll compliance legislation including Employment Standards, Canada Pension Plan, Worker’s Compensation Act, Employment Insurance Act and Income Tax Act
  • Certification from Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) is preferred

This position is located in Parker Drilling's St. John's, NL office.
