    About the Position: This position is located in the Directorate of Public Works, JB Lewis McChord, Tacoma, Washington.     Responsibilities

    • The Maintenance Mechanic Helper helps higher graded employees applying knowledge of plumbing, heating ventilation, and air conditioning, fire extinguishing systems, trade practices, techniques, tools, devices, test, and other related equipment.
    • Performs routine maintenance and repair of HVAC/R equipment and air compressors, e.g., changing filters, clean strainers, drive belt replacement, greasing bearings, oil changes, cleaning coils.
    • Assists in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) equipment and air compressors.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).     Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Mechanic Helper without more than normal supervision. The most difficult and complex of the following duties with minimum supervision: Performing routine maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and air compressors e.g. changing filters, clean strainers, drive belt replacement, greasing bearings, oil changes, cleaning coils, replace minor parts; perform preventative maintenance on air compressors e.g. reciprocating and
    rotary screw; perform plumbing repairs e.g. clearing stoppages, replacing or repairing faucets, supply lines, replacing gaskets, seals or repair kits; Inspect and test equipment after maintenance is performed to ensure operability; Operate motor vehicles and properly secure and transport loads and equipment by trailer; Use powered vertical lifts or platforms and required safety equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element
    will result in an ineligible rating.

    You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

    PHYSICAL EFFORT: - Helper assists in making repairs that may require making installations from ladders, platforms, and scaffolding where parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires him to stoop, stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. Frequently works in confined areas.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:- Works indoors and outdoors for where they are subject to prevailing weather conditions. Incumbent is subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil and fumes in the work area. May be subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, hot water, and steam. In addition, may walk on catwalks and ladders. Subject to electrical shocks and burns, cuts and abrasions, abnormal heat and cold, fumes, burns from hot water and steam lines, disagreeable odors and danger of infection.
