Job description

The role primarily focuses developing, communicating and implementing the in-pit production portions of the daily and weekly mine plans. Acting as the central point for multiple departments the work is dynamic and fast paced, involving exposure to both Operations and Mine Technical.


Tasks and Responsibilities: 


Imperial Oil is currently looking for Mining Engineers to support the Kearl Asset as part of the site based Short Range Mine Technical Team. The position of “ Mine Planner” will be based at the Kearl Mine Site working a 14 days on and 14 days off fly in-fly out schedule. Responsibilities include:

  • Producing and communicating the daily and weekly mine plans using inputs from Mine Operations, the 2-week Schedulers and the 3 Month Plan. 
  • Regular pit tours with Mine Operations to problem solve, gain alignment and drive successful execution of the Mine Plan.   
  • Ensuring that plans meet Alberta Mines Act and Imperial Oil Safety Standards. 
  • Collaborating with Geotechnical Engineers to identify and address areas of concern for stability, including pit highwalls, dig faces, and stockpiles.
  • Providing consistent ore feed at the correct volumes and grades to the processing plants.
  • Collaborating with the Civil Engineer/Dewatering Planner to coordinate road construction, dewatering, and other mine progression activities. 
  • Optimizing shovel bench designs and developing strategies for mining challenging geology.
  • Optimizing pit and bench accesses to maximize haulage productivity.
  • Collaborating with Waste Planners and Geologists to support the construction of In-Pit Structures and material balancing for the dumps.
  • Ensuring that the required data is created and uploaded into the mine dispatch systems.
  • Managing survey requests and work priorities.

Qualifications

 

Academic:

  • Bachelor Degree in Mining Engineering or related fields. Other accountabilities involve continuous improvement to current work practices and ensuring alignment across functions through appropriate change management and communication processes. As well as producing high standard technical deliverables and providing recommendations in various functions across the organization.  A successful candidate will have strong communication skills and the ability to prioritize work. The ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines within both Mine Technical and Mine Operations is required. Prior knowledge of Deswik will be an asset.  

 

Other:

 

  • Minimum of 5 years surface mine experience is required, including but not limited to; mine operations support and execution planning, modeling and design, material balances and mine scheduling, haulage optimization, civil projects, dewatering and tailings. 
  • Must demonstrate safety leadership.
  • Previous field experience in active mine operations is an asset. 
  • Must be willing to work remotely on rotation in a fly in/out operations (14 days on shift and 14 days off shift); camp provided, air travel provided from Calgary or Edmonton or bus transportation from Fort McMurray.
  • Ability to use or learn Deswik or other Mine Planning Software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Bus transportation is also available to Kearl site from Fort McMurray at the beginning and end of each shift rotation for Fort McMurray residents
  • Kearl operations will provide safe, secure and quiet accommodation near to the worksite for employees working on rotating work schedules. Facilities include a private room/washroom for each employee.
