ERM is looking for Environmental Inspection and Sampling Technicians to work part-time at various railroad sites in New Mexico on a number of ongoing environmental projects. Training will be provided for all client-specific and site-specific safety, security, sampling and inspection procedures, and travel and associated expenses will be reimbursed.


  • Travel to client facilities located around the state of NM. The facilities are located throughout New Mexico including Albuquerque, Belen, Gallup, Grants, Clovis, Carlsbad, and also include El Paso, TX.
  • Perform environmental inspections of various railroad facilities and operating areas and record observations using inspection forms.
  • The inspections support compliance with environmental regulations concerning spill prevention, waste water, stormwater, storage tanks, and waste management.
  • As requested, collect samples of stormwater at designated locations and visually inspect the quality of the sample.
  • As needed, collect samples of soil using hand tools.
  • Work with ERM staff to complete sample chain-of-custody documentation, and deliver or ship the samples to a laboratory.
  • Perform work safely, complying with ERM and client requirements and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, including hardhat, safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, and orange high-visibility vest.
  • Work within quality/budget/schedule expectations and scope-specific assignments.
  • Communicate with ERM Project Manager and client staff during field activities.


  • One to five days per week, generally daytime. Daily hours and duration are variable depending on the site location and work to be completed.
  • Given the drive times to some of these locations from Albuquerque, some days may exceed 8-hours including site work and travel, but ERM fatigue management procedures will be implemented to avoid excessively long days. Overnight hotel stays may occasionally be required.
  • Work days are scheduled in advance monthly and are flexible to accommodate other obligations.
  • Availability to occasionally on a weekend would be beneficial.


  • S. citizenship and ability to obtain pass ERM background check.
  • A working vehicle, valid driver’s license, and a good driving record; ability to drive to the various project locations. Ability to rent a vehicle.
  • Availability to work one to five days per week and some daytime, based on the above Schedule conditions.
  • Effective observational and organization skills; experience recording detailed technical data a plus.
  • Effective communication skills with ERM and client staff.
  • Experience with water and soil sample collection a plus.
  • Local candidates only.
