Matrix PDM Engineering

Job Summary

Chief Process Engineer is responsible for the development, implementation, training, and oversight of our engineering design standards across the Company for their respective discipline. The Chief Process Engineer is the owner of standard specifications, work processes and procedures, industry standard code library and drawing libraries. The Chief Process Engineer is responsible for making sure project teams are executing the deliverables in a manner consistent with our standards. Recognizing each industry and client requires an adaptable approach, this position is required to exercise judgment in conjunction with managers and operations as to the correct standard to apply. This position is also responsible for working with Department Managers so that new engineers are trained and mentored. The Chief Process Engineer is a member of the Matrix PDM Engineering Leadership team.

Essential Functions

  • Actively supports the Company's commitment to safety and its "Core Values."

  • Assures compliance with the Company Quality Management System.
  • Establishes and maintains discipline strategy, mission, and goals. Guides discipline leaders and staff to these goals, and clarifies, communicates, and endorses organizational strategy and goals to all departmental employees.
  • Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that inspires and engages clients, co-workers, and management.
  • Leads succession and employee development efforts to assure longer term demands of the Company for their discipline are met. Mentors Engineers within the departments.
  • Supervises Lead Engineers over subspecialties. Assures cross training to allow resource sharing across specialties.
  • Incorporates contributions from external engineering and design resources into project planning and execution. This will include significant resources from international engineering partners.
  • Provides technical oversight on projects executed across the department.
  • Periodically reviews projects of significance for adherence to the Company’s work process and design standards.
  • Interacts with other Chief Engineers to assure all disciplines are well coordinated to provide engineering work product that is consistent and compatible with the larger engineering package.
  • Identifies and assigns the resources to engineering projects.
  • Reviews deliverables on projects with technically challenging design tasks.
  • Participates in and supports company-wide initiatives.
  • Supports company-wide Business Development efforts as needed.
  • Assesses manpower needs versus skill sets and makes recruiting recommendations in collaboration with Engineering Managers and Supervisors.
  • Routinely reviews and speaks to project performance metrics for the discipline.
  • Establishes standard design and analysis tools and methods to provide repeatable and efficient designs.
  • Supports code committee work on API, ASME, and other industry standard committees.
  • Owns, develops, implements, and trains company-wide engineering work instructions, processes, templates, and standards for their respective discipline.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required; MS degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) required. Active PE license with the ability to be licensed in multiple states.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
  • 12+ years of related engineering experience, including 3+ years of previous supervisory or managerial experience with accountability for profitable, timely, and high-quality performance of others.
  • Superior written, verbal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of discipline specific engineering practices and processes,
  • Strong understanding of discipline specific codes and standards, with demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of standards.
  • Strong understanding of systems and mechanical engineering practices and processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of process piping, tanking, blending, and chemical processes.
  • Demonstrated experience developing process parameters including mass flow, heat transfer, capacities, and rates.
  • Demonstrated experience with one of the following analysis tools: HYSYS or other simulation software.
  • Demonstrated experience developing the system design including PFD, PID, Layouts and Specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience developing not to exceed horse powers and basic process data with preliminary information.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying key process and system data.
  • Demonstrated experience selecting equipment such as process units and instruments.
  • Demonstrated experience developing industry specific calculations for systems such as chemical balance, pipe flow rates, compression, maximum intended inventory, and over pressure protection.
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple materials within the industry of expertise.
  • Demonstrated experience interfacing with the mechanical, structural, and electrical engineers.
  • Demonstrated experience with the management of key design basis documents.
  • General understanding of ANSI, ASME, and NFPA.
  • General experience with bulk or liquid material handling, natural gas, food processing, oil and gas, or power industries.
  • Quarterly travel to domestic offices where staff reside. Travel to job sites and client visits as needed. International travel may be required in some cases to support department operations. Total travel is estimated at 25%.
  • Overtime may be required. Market conditions can require extended periods of needed overtime.
