We are currently searching for new talent to fill the role of IT Business Analyst. Based in Aberdeen the post holder will predominantly work with the Operations and HSE&A business area in Aberdeen but there is potential for the scope of work to grow depending on the successful candidate’s skills and background.


The purpose of this role is to effectively understand the operational challenges being experienced by the business and use appropriate business analysis techniques to identify requirements, advise on recommendations and implement solutions that meet those requirements.


This is a varied position with activities spanning complex application support requirements, system enhancements and larger project activities i.e. deploy mobile inspections system across our three operating assets or assess requirements for updating the permit workflow in our control of work system. The post holder will be required to work with a range of technologies and applications, be comfortable with stakeholder management at a senior level and manage vendor relationships.


Some core deliverables are as follows:

  • Apply business analysis skills to validate and understand business problems, document requirements, and deliver recommendations of solutions
  • Create necessary documentation to support effective communication to the business and IT peers throughout delivery of assigned activities
  • Ensure consistent and controlled delivery of solutions by adhering to CNOOCs Project Management methodology and IT Change Management processes.
  • Collaborate with application vendors when/if issues occur with assigned applications from the CNOOC portfolio to provide timely resolution.
  • Plan for and undertake maintenance activities such as patches and upgrades for assigned applications
  • Proactively develop good working relationships with business stakeholders and other IT groups

Who are we looking for?

Qualified to degree level in a Computer Science Qualification - or have similar experience in role - you will have a proven track record whilst demonstrating your commitment to the ongoing development of your technical skills. We are particularly interested in you if you have the following skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Oil and Gas Upstream Technology and Application Landscape
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement/management up to senior levels
  • Experience of applying Requirements Engineering and Business Process Modelling skills to document requirements aligned to a business vision/problem.
  • Strong Technical writing skills e.g. preparation of business cases, project communications, test plans or other user documentation
  • Comfortable managing vendors to deliver agreed services
  • Effective prioritisation and time management to own/lead multiple activities at the same time
  • Understanding of GDPR and when assessment is required
  • Understanding of structured, real-time and unstructured data through various sources and technologies
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and experience of delivering against plan
  • Knowledge of change management principles
